Bay High Football Team Looking Forward to a Strong Season
The Bay High School Football Team, along with the Steppers, Marching Band, and Cheerleaders, held Meet the Team night on Thursday, August 13th, at the J.D. McCullouch Stadium. The football team is excited about a strong season this year under the direction of new head coach, Jeff Hopgood.
Hopgood is well respected by players and fellow coaches. He works diligently with teachers to be sure his athletes’ grades stay at a B or above. He also gives his coaches the necessary support. “[Hopgood] is one of the reasons I came back here,” states Keith Pigott, assistant coach. “He’s very organized, doesn’t micromanage, and lets you do your job.”
Through all of the praise Hopgood remains humble, while highlighting his athletes for their talents. He holds the students to high expectations this season. “The strength of this football team is in the Senior class. They are an exceptional group of young men. They show great leadership on the field.” E.J. Taylor, Senior Free Safety, knows that “[The seniors] worked hard and expect to succeed this year.”
As for Hopgood’s predictions for the season, “If we stay injury free, I feel like we will be competitive this year.” Coach Pigott feels that may have something to do with his defense. He feels they have “done a great job on learning the system, doing their job within the system, and playing together.” Braxton Lafontaine, Quarterback for the Tigers, knows that the offense is extremely competitive and will surprise competitors with their strength this season.
Hosting the Meet the Team night is a way to promote community involvement for the football program. Hopgood and Pigott are thankful for the support from the community. According to Hopgood, “Success is a group effort and we need everyone to get involved. I feel like we are off to great start.”
