Title I Programs
Title I Basic (Title I, Part A)
No Child Left Behind Act of 2001

Federal Resource:

State Resource:
http://www.mde.k12.ms.us/innovative_support/index.html

Purpose

The purpose of Title I is to provide local educational agencies with extra resources to help improve instruction in high-poverty schools and to ensure that all children have the same opportunity to meet challenging State academic standards. Title I funding may be used in two ways: schoolwide programming or targeted-assistance programming.

Schoolwide Program

  • The school district may consolidate and use funds together with other Federal, State, and Local funds to upgrade the entire educational program of a school.
  • To be eligible for a schoolwide program, a school must have not less than 40% of the children from low-income families. The district uses the percentage of families qualifying for free and reduced lunch to determine eligibility for schoolwide programs.
  • A school participating in a schoolwide program must use funds to supplement the amount of funds that would, in the absence of Title I funds, be made available from non-Federal sources.

Targeted-Assistance Program

  • Resources help participating children meet the State's challenging student academic achievement standards expected for all children.
  • Schools ensure that planning for students served is incorporated into existing school planning.
  • Effective methods and instructional strategies used are scientifically research-based to strengthen the core academic program of the school.
  • Students served are in academic need and selected on the basis of multiple, educationally-related, objective criteria.
