The Bay-Waveland School District is phasing in the Common Core State Standards, curriculum guidelines currently adopted by 48 states. The district's gifted program spans grades 2-6, and the high school offers a range of advanced placement courses. All classrooms are equipped with Promethean Boards and all schools have computer labs and libraries with full-time librarians.

Bay High seniors regularly receive scholarship money for the honors colleges in Mississippi state universities, and last year's seniors more than doubled their scholarship offerings over the previous year. A full scholarship to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, a Horatio Alger scholarship and USM's Presidential scholarship were some of the awards bestowed in 2011.

The Bay-Waveland School District received a High Performing label under Mississippi's 2011 accountability model released by the Mississippi State Board of Education. This is the second highest possible rating and one step up from last year's Successful rating. The district also enjoys the highest completion rate and lowest drop out rate on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
